Getting to County Fermanagh

You’ll find County Fermanagh in the south-west corner of Northern Ireland, south of County Tyrone and west of County Armagh. Almost a third of the county is covered by lakes and waterways, and while a boat is one amazing way of getting around the county, getting to County Fermanagh from anywhere can be easily done by car and bus.

Getting to County Fermanagh from Belfast

By car, take the M1 motorway westbound from Belfast and then the A4 which brings you right into the heart of Enniskillen. At 83 miles this journey should take you little more than 90 minutes from Belfast’s city centre to the foot of Enniskillen’s towering medieval castle.

By bus, start from Belfast’s Europa Buscentre where there are a number of services operating to Enniskillen, including the Translink Goldline 261 service. The journey takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes before making its way through rolling hills and farmland until it reaches the shores of Lough Erne, at Enniskillen’s Translink Ulsterbus station.

Getting to County Fermanagh from Dublin

Enniskillen is one of the most accessible of Northern Ireland’s large towns and makes a perfect base from which to explore County Fermanagh and also County Tyrone with its extraordinary Sperrin Mountains. What’s more, Derry-Londonderry, the Causeway Coast and Belfast are less than 90 minutes by car from Enniskillen.

By car, take the M3 motorway northbound towards Cavan and then follow the A3 through Belturbet. Soon after Belturbet, the A3 becomes the A509 Derrylin Road which leads you right into the centre of Enniskillen. The journey of 165 km takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. For the final 30 minutes you’ll see Upper Lough Erne shimmering through the trees and reeds on your right hand side, offering a sneak preview of the wonderful adventures ahead.

By bus, Bus Eireann operates a number of daily services from Busárus that will get you to Enniskillen in a little under 3 hours. Take the Donegal bus (30 and 30X) from Busárus which stops at the Translink Ulsterbus station next to Enniskillen’s Lakeland Forum – right on the lakeshore and the perfect introduction to any visit to County Fermanagh.
